Vesper's Algerian Love Knot from Casino Royale
Vesper Lynd wears an Algerian Love Knot necklace throughout most of Casino Royale, only removing it toward the end to signify that she was over her previous lover. Many people have been intrigued by the necklace, which was commissioned from Sophie Harley specially for the movie, but has proved to be prohibitively expensive for most of us.
The origin of love knots seems to hark back to primitive times, when knots were associated with sorcery and magic, as well as having the obvious uses.
Knots could be used for both black and white magic and were associated with the weather; health, life and death; love, fertility and childbirth; and spirits and gods.
In modern times a love knot is a stylized version of one of these magic love knots, made of three or more intertwined rings or tubes that are flattened after assembly and most often encountered in the form of a celtic love knot.
It seems that sailors on long voyages took with them intricate knots to remind them of their loved ones back home and these developed into the love nots we know today.
The Algerian Love Knot necklace in Casino Royale consists of three intertwined bands with an intricate decoration on a triple chain. Although Sophie Harley’s design is expensive, there is also a sterling silver Algerian Love Knot inspired by her design that is much more affordable. While not a direct copy, it does have much the same feel and is worth the investment for an would be James Bond for their own Bond girl.
